C Jinarajadasa Proclaims
In
October 1916 leading Theosophist C Jinarajadasa (later president 1945 – 1953)
visited
The
Speech in which he set out to allay fears about The Indian Home Rule Movement,
which had intensified as a result of the First World War, was made at the Park
Hotel. This report appeared in the Western Mail of October 30th
1916.
There
was a crowded audience at the Park Hotel, Cardiff, on Saturday night, when the
well known lecturer, C Jinarajadasa M.A. (Cantab) gave an address under the
auspices of the Cardiff Lodge of the Theosophical Society, on “India’s Place in
the Empire” The lecturer reminded his audience that two years ago a thrill of
interest went through the whole British Empire when it was heard that Indian
soldiers had landed in France and were fighting side by side with the British.
But, though British papers commented on their loyalty, the Indians could not
understand why such a fuss should be made of their action. It was the
King-Emperor they reverenced, and it was a matter of duty to him. England had a
King, India had a King-Emperor, and an Empire could not be talked of it if four
fifths of it were ignored. Indians had formed hopes of one day being a Dominion
and not a Dependency. So it was that
